Family Tree Tuesday ? Ricky Nelson

Ricky Nelson

Ricky Nelson was an American singer-songwriter, instumentalist, and actor. He played himself in the radio sitcom series, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet in 1949 which was the start of his entertainment career and he appeared in his first feature film, Here Come the Nelsons in 1952. In 1957, he recorded his first single, debuted as a singer on the television version of the sitcom, and recorded a number one album, Ricky.?Nelson was the first teen idol to utilize television to promote hit records. His father Ozzie Nelson even had the idea to edit footage together to create some of the first music videos, which can be seen in videos Ozzie produced for ?Travelin? Man.?

Nelson was born Eric Hilliard Nelson on May 8, 1940 in Teaneck, NJ to Ozzie Nelson and Harriet Hilliard. He played football at Hollywood High School and represented the school in interscholastic tennis matches. He joined the Rooks, a greaser car club of sideburned high school teens clad in leather jackets and motorcycle boots in retaliation as he was blackballed by the Elksters, a fraternity of a dozen conservative sports-loving teens who thought him too wild. Many of the Elksters were family friends and spent weekends at the Nelson home playing basketball or relaxing around the pool.?Twenty-five years later, he told the Los Angeles Weekly he hated school because it ?smelled of pencils? and he was forced to rise early in the morning to attend.

Ricky, Ozzie, Harriet and David

Ozzie Nelson was an American entertainer and big band leader who originated and starred in The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet along with his wife and two sons. His paternal grandparents were Swedish and his mother was of English decent. He was raised in Ridgefield Park, NJ and graduated from Ridgefield Park High School, where he played on the football team. In the early 1990s, Ridgefield Park named a street after him, where the current high school is located.?Ozzie Nelson became an Eagle Scout at 13 and was a recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America. Ozzie formed and led the Ozzie Nelson Band and made his own ?big break? in 1930 when the New York Daily Mirror ran a poll of its readers to determine their favorite band. He knew that news vendors got credit from the newspaper for unsold copies by returning the front page and discarding the rest of the issue. Gathering hundreds of discarded newspapers, the band filled out ballots in their favor and they were pronounced the winners.

Harriet Hilliard?s birth name was Peggy Lou Snyder and was an American singer and actress. She was performing in vaudeville when she met Ozzie Nelson who hired her to sing with his band and they married three years later. She appeared in three feature films, the most famous being the Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers musical Follow the Fleet.

Ricky?s older brother David Nelson was an American actor, director, and producer. He attended Hollywood High School and was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity while attending the University of Southern California. David directed several espisodes of?The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. He started his own commercial production company.

Nelson who was a non-practicing Protestant, received instruction in Catholicism at the insistence of the bride?s parents, and signed a pledge to have any children of the union baptized in the Catholic faith.

They had four children: actress Tracy Kristine Nelson, twin sons Gunnar Eric Nelson and Matthew Gray Nelson who formed the band Nelson, and Sam Hilliard Nelson.

How to Write a Cover Letter That Will Get You Your Dream Job ...

How to Write a Cover Letter That Will Get You Your Dream Job

You?ve done it. At last the search is over. You?ve found your dream job.

Now the question is how to get considered for the position when there are 250 other applicants? The best, most direct way you can showcase your talent is only partially through your resume?the first impression you make is with the cover letter. Resumes are flat. This is your opportunity to become three-dimensional to your prospective employer. Don?t hate the cover letter?embrace it! You can write the perfect cover letter that?s going to open doors to set you on your path to your dream job. Here?s how.

1. Brainstorm. Write a list of five positive adjectives, attributes, or skills that describe you. Don?t just pick adjectives at random?you have to be able to support them with evidence. Here are some samples to get you started:

  • Excellent time management skills: took 18 hour course load as part of your degree in Communication, participated in 4 clubs, and volunteered 20 hours per week, while maintaining at 3.75 GPA.
  • Compassionate: volunteer at a soup kitchen 20 hours per week
  • Creative: hobbies are painting and pottery, member of the Creative Writing Society and Poetry Exchange

2. How to Begin. ?I understand that you want to be unique and eye-catching. The first two sentences of a cover letter are generally not the place to do so. It?s slightly formulaic, but you should always being your cover letter with a statement of purpose. First and foremost, they have to know what position you?re applying for! You should begin with a variant of:

  • ?I am writing to express my interest in the position of Junior Community Editor and Curator. I would like to briefly share why I feel I am a strong candidate for the position.?

3. Make your Battle Plan. You have to be strategic about what to highlight in your cover letter. You need to critically scan the job description and incorporate strategic words in your letter. Large corporations actually scan cover letters and chuck out the applications that don?t mention certain key words.

A Real Job Description from Monsters.com

How to do this? Let?s pick apart an actual advertisement for a Junior Community Editor & Curator position. The description stresses analytics, research, social networking and social business platforms, strong communication skills?make sure you include these words in your cover letter!? This job was tailored made for communication and humanities majors. Your BS degree in Communication provides you with the exact skill set they?re looking for. They want strategic newsletters? Perfect! Your course in Strategic Communication taught you how to strategically target stakeholders in publications, and you developed the skill as part of your internship with Marketing, where you strategically designed a newsletter for incoming freshman. You?ve conducted in-depth research on the emerging trend of advertising across social media platforms, and are masterful in using Facebook, Twitter, Google-Plus, LinkedIn, and Pinterest. Moreover, you contributed to the department blog for Humanities and Communication at Florida Tech, where you received intensive training on how to write effective posts with Google Analytics [hint hint?email me at kbroderi2007@fit.edu if you would like to be a contributor!]. Rattle off any skill sets that showcase your communication skills with relevant experience:? strategic communication, new media, layout and design and your role in professional organizations like Florida Public Relations Association and the newspaper The Crimson.

You generally want to keep this section to around three paragraphs. Unlike the short introduction, you can be as expressive as you want, but keep in mind that the best cover letters are one page?you aren?t doing yourself any favors by being super wordy. This is just a taster. If they?re interested in you, they?ll arrange an interview.

It should be single-spaced, and your paragraphs should not be intended, but you should include a blank line to separate paragraphs.?

4. Signing off. You have to revert to a more formal ending. Use a variant of:

  • ?Thank you for your consideration. I would love to discuss the position further with you at your convenience.?
  • Use a formal goodbye, such as: regards, sincerely, or best wishes. Hit ?Enter? three for four spaces to leave a space for your signature, and then type your full name. Be sure to include your contact information?even if it?s listed on your resume, the two may get separated. Then, in a black or blue pen, sign your name? above your typed name. It should look like this:

How to Sign Your Cover Letter

?

Newbie mistakes to avoid:

Use the right company name! Ideally, you should try and tailor each cover letter to the position that you?re applying for; however, when you?re apply for 20 jobs, I can understand how you might not have the time. If you?re simply plugging in the company?s name in a form letter, make sure you change it all the way through: how seriously do you think a recruiter of Corporation X is going to take a cover letter that says ?I would love the opportunity to work at Company Y!??

Proofread proofread proofread! Spell check isn?t enough: you might have written ?through? instead of ?though? or?horror of horrors?misused ?their? and ?they?re.? It?s always better to have a second set of eyes look over your work if you can.

Don?t lose your ?youness!? along the way! A cover letter is a unique opportunity. It is a mirror that you are the dictator of?you can selectively showcase the assets you want to highlight, but the end result still needs to be you. Don?t lose the ?youness? along the way!

?

Still having issues with your cover letter and resume? Fortunately, Florida Tech has an amazing Career Management Services program.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ? The Texas Rangers agreed to a minor league deal with free-agent pitcher Roy Oswalt with the anticipation that he will join the rotation within a few weeks.

Assuming Oswalt passes a physical, he is expected to join Triple-A Round Rock at some point this week.

The deal was announced in the middle of the Rangers' game Tuesday night against Seattle.

The three-time All-Star was interested in joining the two-time defending American League champions during the offseason, but the Rangers were then set with their starting rotation.

The Rangers signed Japanese star Yu Darvish in January, a month after C.J. Wilson left in free agency. Plus, the Rangers had already decided to move hard-throwing closer Neftali Feliz from the bullpen into the starting rotation.

But Feliz was put on the 15-day disabled list May 21 with right elbow inflammation and is not even expected to pick up a baseball again until late June. Scott Feldman, a 17-game winner as a starter in 2009 but who has since been primarily a long reliever because of an injury, made his second start in Feliz's spot Tuesday night.

Oswalt likely will make several minor league starts before joining the Texas rotation. Rangers officials went to Oswalt's home in Mississippi two weeks ago to watch him pitch.

Several teams had interest in Oswalt during the winter and in recent weeks. He had decided to wait until the right situation for him.

During his 10 seasons with the Houston Astros, Oswalt had connections with Ryan, the Hall of Famer pitcher who played and worked for both teams.

In 11 major league seasons with Houston (2001-10) and Philadelphia (2010-11), the 34-year-old Oswalt has a 159-93 record with a 3.21 ERA in 339 career games.

Oswalt had two stints on the disabled list last season because of lower back inflammation. He went 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA in 23 starts for the Phillies. His 139 innings pitched were his lowest total since 2003.

In eight career starts at Rangers Ballpark, Oswalt is 2-5 with a 4.78 ERA. He lost his last five starts there, but those were against the power-packed Texas lineup that would now be playing behind him.

Oswalt last pitched against the Rangers on June 27, 2010, a night when slugger Josh Hamilton hit a homer several rows into the upper deck in right-center field way above the Texas bullpen. The drive was measured at 490 feet, the longest home run ever hit at Rangers Ballpark.

Hamilton, talking before the team had confirmed the deal, said Oswalt is a good pitcher that would be a good mix with the Rangers.

"He's been around a long time, he's had a good career and obviously it's still going on," Hamilton said. "I'm sure just like anybody else, he'll come into the clubhouse and fit right in just like anybody else would. We'll make sure he does. It should be exciting."

The deal with Oswalt came on the same day the Phillies and AL West rival Los Angeles Angels put their ace pitchers on the disabled list.

The Phillies put two-time Cy Young winner Roy Halladay on the disabled list and he'll be out of the rotation for six to eight weeks because of a strained right shoulder. Angels starter Jered Weaver was put on the DL with a lower-back injury, likely forcing last season's AL Cy Young runner-up to miss at least two starts.

Be ready for the new gaming experiences | Web design tutorial

Holiday season is approaching fast and so is the gaming season. Considered the perfect time to turn consoles and games into commercial market. The biggest companies in the video game console business, Microsoft Corp., Sony Corp., and Nintendo corp., have come up with new games and services at the same time, targeting mainstream users like never before.

Earlier most video game consoles were aimed at serious players who spent the most money and time on games but now the companies are aiming at players who purchase game machines when their costs are reduced and when better arrays of titles become available.

So what are the offers?

Microsoft has clinched a deal with Netflix Inc., an online rental service, to stream movies over the Internet to Xbox 360 game machines. The announcement came on the eve of the Electronic Entertainment Expo Media and Business Summit, a major video game industry trade show in Los Angeles. The Xbox owners will now be able to watch movies streamed through game consoles to their TVs.

Sony is also expected to demonstrate its own service for downloading movies and television shows from the Internet to PlayStation 3s. According to Sony, this summer, its store for buying and renting movies and other video content on the PlayStation 3 should go online.

The credit of all these current moves, by Sony and Microsoft, goes to the sensational commercial success of rival Nintendo Co. Nintendo turned industry rules by going after casual game players with its Wii gaming system right from the day the console went on sale.

Nintendo stressed on fun intuitive Wii games. Instead of the costly and hyper-realistic graphics favored by hard-core players, it has been using the console?s motion-sensing controller. In the U.S., Microsoft and Nintendo are neck-to-neck in selling their latest generation of consoles.

It is slated to release a new video game accessory for its Wii game system, Wii Motion Plus. It will help improve responsiveness and precision in tracking the hand movements of players. The new accessory will attach to the existing motion-sensing controller. The device will enable even slight flicks of the wrist and arm to be rendered on screens.

He said that he expects garbage pick-up on Monday will be halted.

At this time, there are not plans to close Jacksonville International Airport and there are no bridge closures, he said. Updates on the Jacksonville Port Authority are forthcoming.

The city will open a special-needs shelter at the Legends Center at Soutel and Moncrief in Northwest Jacksonville at noon. Anyone electricity- and oxygen-dependent should use this shelter if there are power outages or flooding.

Learning Style:
There are three basic ways people learn: visual (reading, watching demonstrations, reviewing charts), auditory (listening, making a presentation) and tactile or kinesthetic (performing a task, actively doing). The highlighted text or images that, when clicked, jump you from one web page or item of content to another. Bloggers use links a lot when writing, to reference their own or other content. Linking is another aspect of sharing, by which you offer content that may be linked, and acknowledge the value of other?s people?s contributions by linking to them. It is part of being open and generous.

Listening:
In the blogosphere listening is the art of skimming feeds to see what topics are bubbling up, and also setting up searches that monitor when you or your organization are mentioned.

Location:
The nature of location and presence is changed by the Internet and social media, because you can be active online in many different places, including in virtual worlds.

Logging in:
The process for gaining access to a website. Once registered, it will require a usename and password each time for signing in. The username may be your ?real? name, or a combination of letters and/or numbers chosen for the purpose.

Lurkers:
People who read but don?t contribute or add comments to forums. The one per cent rule-of-thumb suggests about one per cent of people contribute new content to an online community, another nine percent comment, and the rest lurk. However, this may not be a passive role because content read on forums may spark interaction elsewhere.

Mapping:
Mapping networks enables you see who are the main connecting people. To do that you may need to ask people who they communicate with most frequently. If you want to grow an online community or network from an existing ?real world? network, it will be important that the key people in the network overlap with the champions for online networking.

Mashups:
The smart mixes that techies do to combine several tools to create entirely new web services.

Meetings:
Meetings are important in social networking in at least two ways. First, they accelerate the process of people getting to know each other.? Second, the open and fluid style of social media is making those using it impatient with committee-style meetings and conferences dominated by platform speakers. With a little commitment it is possible to agree on some meeting topics beforehand; circulate material, capture discussion at the time, carry on discussions afterwards ? or maybe not have the meeting at all. Use Voice over IP, chat, instant messaging ? or even a get-together in a virtual world.

Membership:
Involves belonging to a group. Networking can offer some of the benefits of group membership, without the need for as much central co-ordination. A rise in networking may present challenges for organizations who depend on membership for funds or to demonstrate their credibility.

Meme:
A unit of cultural information such as a popular tune, a catch-phrase, belief or fashion that can virally propagate from one mind to another. Online, it may be shared among bloggers or participants of social sites as a game, activity or quiz (e.g., name 50 favorite authors, the 100 worst songs, 10 favorite movies).

Micro-blogging:
A form of blogging that allows users to write brief text updates (usually 140 characters) and publish them, either to be viewed by anyone or by a restricted group which can be chosen by the user, and then sent via text messaging, instant messaging, email, MP3 or web formats. Two common micro-blogging applications are Twitter and Digg.

Moblog:
Abbreviated from ?mobile blog?. This is a blog dedicated to the distribution, sharing and/or rating of digital/camera-phone images, audio-casts or videos.

MP3:
An audio compression format that allows almost CD-quality fidelity with only 10% of the file size by discarding frequencies that cannot be heard by the human ear or that clash with similar frequencies. The name comes from MP(EG-1 layer) 3.

?Narrowcasting:
A term used in opposition to ?broadcasting? to describe a podcast?s ability to reach a narrowly focused, highly interested audience.

Neophyte:
Someone who is new to the Internet or new to computers in general, it refers to mature people who don?t want to be called a newbie.

Netroots:
A term coined to describe political activism organized through blogs and other online media including wikis, podcasts and various social networking sites.

Networks:
Structures defined by nodes and the connections between them. In social networks the nodes are people, and the connections are the relationships that they have. Networking is the process by which you develop and strengthen those relationships.

Netizen:
A citizen of the Internet, as in, one who spends a significant amount of time online or is an experienced user of the Net.

News Feed:
A collection of headlines, news or story highlights, made available on the Internet in a standard format, often from a blog or news source made available in RSS format so that other sites and programs can check and download them automatically. News feeds can be used to publish information about podcasts. Podcast clients can subscribe to podcast news feeds, and use their information to find new shows to download.

Newsreader:
A website or desktop tool that acts as an aggregator, gathering content from blogs and similar sites using RSS feeds, so you can read the content in one place, instead of having to visit different sites.

Memorial Day: 1% mock US military with unlawful wars; when are arrests?

The 1% mock America?s war dead on every Memorial Day because they continuously damn more US soldiers to kill and die in unlawful wars.

This is an insult to our military past and present, and their families. Because an unlawful war is a literal attack upon US soldiers, it is also treason by the 1% upon American military.

Current US wars are not close to lawful: war law is the legal victory all of our families sacrificed to achieve through two world wars: no nation is allowed to use their military in armed attack unless under attack by another nation?s government.

War law was primarily authored by the US, and has treaty status that from Article 6 of the US Constitution makes this US ?Supreme Law.? All US military and various US law enforcement have oaths to ?support and defend the US Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.? Because there are no lawful orders in an unlawful war, all US soldiers and law enforcement officers are charged to refuse such orders, and act to arrest those who issue them.

All US military are trained to refuse unlawful orders, with officers authorized to arrest those who issue unlawful orders. The problem is that the 1% who want these wars educate our military on lawful orders once war has begun, but never on the law when war itself is lawful or not. The 1% who own the 6 corporations that dominate US media will also never communicate war law.

Therefore, the US military have the power to end the 1%?s mockery of their service, their families, and trillions of the 99%?s tax dollars whenever individuals or groups so choose.

How much longer will US military and law enforcement tolerate 1% policies of war that kill millions, harm billions, and loot trillions?

Importantly, the 99% of the American public also dishonor our military with any thoughts, words, or deeds under illegal US Wars of Aggression other than to demand arrests of obvious US War Criminals, and immediate end of the criminal wars.

The 99%?s confusion is understandable, given the lies corporate media have told, including in our history texts.

?A mere demarcation on parchment of the constitutional limits (of government) is not a sufficient guard against those encroachments which lead to a tyrannical concentration of all the powers of government in the same hands.??- James Madison, Federalist Paper #48, 1788.

US war history brief to put the present in context:

1. The US regularly violated treaties with Native Americans, as well as manipulating their meaning for the purpose of stealing their land.

2. US President Polk lied to Congress to initiate a War of Aggression in Mexico. The result was the US taking 40% of Mexico in 1848. This occurred despite Abraham Lincoln?s crystal-clear explanation as a member of Congress that the Adams-Onis Treaty placed the ?border dispute? 400 miles within land forever promised to Mexico and forever promised as outside any US claim.

3. The US violated our treaty with Hawaii and stole their country in 1898.

4. The US reneged on promises of freedom after the Spanish American War to impose our rule on the Philippines and install US-friendly dictators in Cuba.

5. The US entered WW1 upon no national security threat to the US and put the 3rd party presidential candidate in prison for public speeches questioning the war.

6. The CIA had several covert wars; perhaps most important in today?s context of war on Iran: ?Operation Ajax? that overthrew Iran?s democracy and installed a US-friendly and brutal dictator.? When that dictator was overthrown and Iran refused another, the US aided Iraq to unlawfully invade and attack Iran from 1980-1988; killing up to a million Iranians. If the US lied and acted twice to unlawfully overthrew Iran?s democracy within our own lifetimes, shouldn?t we assume first another lie-started unlawful war today? Upon confirmation of the lies (documented below), shouldn?t we arrest the US War Criminals rather than allow them to kill again?!?

7. The Vietnam War occurred after the US allowed the cancellation of an election to unify the country, as escalated with the Gulf of Tonkin incident: false intelligence at best, but then manipulated into a false-flag event for a ?defensive? war.

8. Perhaps most disturbing is the King Family civil suit that found the US government guilty in the assassination of Dr. King. Corporate media, including our text publishers, omit this history. The King family?s conclusion is that Martin was assassinated to prevent his ?Occupy DC? plan beginning for the sumer of 1968 to end his version of today?s wars.

9. We now know from Congressional reports that all ?reasons? for war with Iraq were known to be false as they were told.

10. The two ?reasons? for war with Iran are as false as the ?reasons? for war with Iraq. Beware a false flag attack by the US or Israel to blame on Iran as pretext for another ?defensive? war:

  1. Iran?s president never physically threatened Israel.
  2. All of Iran?s nuclear material is fully accounted for peaceful and legal use for energy and medicine.

Want a brighter future? Recognize and end the ?emperor has no clothes? obvious crimes of the present as a first step. Standing for a US government that defends unalienable rights that begin with ?life,? the freedom that government will not murder, is a good place to start.

I invite you all to stand with Lincoln?s assertion:

?? let every American pledge his life, his property, and his sacred honor;?let every man remember that to violate the law, is to trample on the blood of his father, and to tear the character of his own, and his children?s liberty. Let reverence for the laws, be breathed by every American mother, to the lisping babe, that prattles on her lap?let it be taught in schools, in seminaries, and in colleges; let it be written in Primers, spelling books, and in Almanacs;?let it be preached from the pulpit, proclaimed in legislative halls, and enforced in courts of justice. And, in short, let it become the political religion of the nation; and let the old and the young, the rich and the poor, the grave and the gay, of all sexes and tongues, and colors and conditions, sacrifice unceasingly upon its altars.

While ever a state of feeling, such as this, shall universally, or even, very generally prevail throughout the nation, vain will be every effort, and fruitless every attempt, to subvert our national freedom.?

Readers: please note the counters for ?like? and sharing are constantly reset to zero for my articles, and comments are disappeared. This is usual for people who present facts that refute the 1%?s war and looting lies and crimes. Look-up Operation Mockingbird and ?Mass media information center? at www.wanttoknow.info?

Debt Negotiation For Credit Cards

With debt negotiation for a credit card, consumers in heavy debt can work with creditors and negotiate new terms and conditions of payment. With this assistance, a person can find relief from the stress of unpaid bills and accumulating late fees. There are many avenues to research when looking for help with excessive obligations, and debt negotiation for credit cards can be just one of the chosen methods. There are millions of people with outstanding payments, who are searching for the right service to help to improve their financial ratings and make their financial futures more secure. With a service that can help negotiate terms, the consumer can receive the assistance they need before resorting to bankruptcy or other drastic measures. When a consumer is investigating debt negotiation for credit cards, they are going to find that their existing obligations might be negotiable. There are financial agencies and attorneys that can work with creditors in negotiating new conditions of a loan or credit extension. Organizations that offer debt negotiation for a credit card can provide a variety of services, which may include lowered interest rates, negated late fees, and a lower principal balance. In some cases, principals can be settled for up to half the amount. When there is a settlement, some agencies will want to be paid cash at the time of negotiations, if the principal is dropped to a lower price. There are also opportunities to refinance a negotiated new principal balance. This new balance can also have a lower interest rate due to the new terms and conditions of the agreement.

In America today, buying with credit has become the mode of trade. Financial reports can determine how well a consumer can operate within this system. And, as the world has turned toward becoming a cashless society, there has been an increase in family spending and budgeting problems. To address the issues rising from over spending, there has been an influx of agencies created that offer a variety of services that address debt negotiation for credit cards. Reducing the obligations listed on a financial record will raise a consumers financial score and give them a manageable figure to work with. Debt negotiation for a credit card can help a consumer truly begin to make improvements in their financial situation and give them the freedom to enjoy a positive cash flow again.

Financial problems can become overwhelming, bringing extreme stress to a family. If any family is experiencing difficulties due to finances, then turning to God can help relieve some of the stress. It may seem overwhelming to take care of the obligations that have been incurred, but with the Lord, all things are possible. "I can do all things through Christ which strengthen me." (Philippians 4:13) Consumers must seek the Lord before making major financial decisions and seeking debt negotiation for credit cards.

Technology to keep you fit

Technology to keep you fit(ARA) ? As Americans? appetites for new gadgets grow, so do our waste lines. But what if your iPad or smartphone or even your gaming system could help you get in shape and stay there? While your smartphone can?t double as a dumbbell, all that technology you?re lugging around actually can help get and keep you fit.

If you?re always on the go, start measuring just how far you are going with a pedometer application for your smartphone. And kick it up a notch with one that will post your results to your Facebook page. ?Not only does it track you, but it let?s all your friends know if you?re slacking,? says Shannan Wheaton, academic director for Graphic Design and Web Design & Interactive Media at The Art Institute of Ohio ? Cincinnati. You can take your workout to the next level with race training apps that will help to pace you, maximize your potential and get you ready for your first 5K or fifth marathon.

If you?re always eating out or want to know just how much of a caloric punch that a gallon of ice cream really packs, there are plenty of apps that will help you count your calories. You can choose from thousands of restaurant menus stored on the app or choose your favorite supermarket foods. The apps will even help you calculate how many calories per day you should consume based on your current height, weight and goals. Those apps also allow you to track the calories you burn during exercise and take that into account when giving you a daily calorie allotment.

And if you can?t be bothered to type in your food selection, Ted Long, academic director of Web Design & Interactive Media, Digital Filmmaking & Video Production and Visual Effects & Motion Graphics at The Illinois Institute of Art ? Schaumburg has a solution. ?Mealsnap lets you take a picture of the food you?re about to consume and gives you the calorie count by comparing your image to the images it has stored in its database,? he says.

Once you get home and start charging your phone, you may want to unwind with your Xbox, Wii or Playstation. Good thing all three systems have interactive workouts that could have you doing crunches, boxing against a virtual opponent or dancing the pounds off. ?Any activity you can do outside, like cross country skiing or baseball, you can do with these gaming systems,? says Li Harmon academic director of Game Art & Design, Media Arts & Animation and Visual Effects & Motion Graphics at The Art Institute of Las Vegas. Harmon adds that some of these games even make you feel guilty if you haven?t done your virtual workout in a while.

If you?re always heading out of town on business and don?t want to sweat it out at the hotel gym, take your virtual yoga instructor with you. Long says there?s a yoga app that comes with HD video so you can see each of your instructor?s positions more clearly.

Wheaton says there?s more of that kind of workout coming in the future. ?We?re heading toward a video world and we?re going to see more virtual personal trainers in the future.?

Just how effective will all these technologies be in the long run? Wheaton, Long and Harmon all agree, that just like a gym membership, you have to use it to get results.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes riddled with defects and impurities on the outside could replace some of the expensive platinum catalysts used in fuel cells and metal-air batteries, according to scientists at Stanford University. Their findings are published in the May 27 online edition of the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

"Platinum is very expensive and thus impractical for large-scale commercialization," said Hongjie Dai, a professor of chemistry at Stanford and co-author of the study. "Developing a low-cost alternative has been a major research goal for several decades."

Over the past five years, the price of platinum has ranged from just below $800 to more than $2,200 an ounce. Among the most promising, low-cost alternatives to platinum is the carbon nanotube a rolled-up sheet of pure carbon, called graphene, that's one-atom thick and more than 10,000 times narrower a human hair. Carbon nanotubes and graphene are excellent conductors of electricity and relatively inexpensive to produce.

For the study, the Stanford team used multi-walled carbon nanotubes consisting of two or three concentric tubes nested together. The scientists showed that shredding the outer wall, while leaving the inner walls intact, enhances catalytic activity in nanotubes, yet does not interfere with their ability to conduct electricity.

"A typical carbon nanotube has few defects," said Yanguang Li, a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford and lead author of the study. "But defects are actually important to promote the formation of catalytic sites and to render the nanotube very active for catalytic reactions."

Unzipped

For the study, Li and his co-workers treated multi-walled nanotubes in a chemical solution. Microscopic analysis revealed that the treatment caused the outer nanotube to partially unzip and form nanosized graphene pieces that clung to the inner nanotube, which remained mostly intact.

"We found that adding a few iron and nitrogen impurities made the outer wall very active for catalytic reactions," Dai said. "But the inside maintained its integrity, providing a path for electrons to move around. You want the outside to be very active, but you still want to have good electrical conductivity. If you used a single-wall carbon nanotube you wouldn't have this advantage, because the damage on the wall would degrade the electrical property."

In fuel cells and metal-air batteries, platinum catalysts play a crucial role in speeding up the chemical reactions that convert hydrogen and oxygen to water. But the partially unzipped, multi-walled nanotubes might work just as well, Li added. "We found that the catalytic activity of the nanotubes is very close to platinum," he said. "This high activity and the stability of the design make them promising candidates for fuel cells."

The researchers recently sent samples of the experimental nanotube catalysts to fuel cell experts for testing. "Our goal is to produce a fuel cell with very high energy density that can last very long," Li said.

Multi-walled nanotubes could also have applications in metal-air batteries made of lithium or zinc.

"Lithium-air batteries are exciting because of their ultra-high theoretical energy density, which is more than 10 times higher than today's best lithium ion technology," Dai said. "But one of the stumbling blocks to development has been the lack of a high-performance, low-cost catalyst. Carbon nanotubes could be an excellent alternative to the platinum, palladium and other precious-metal catalysts now in use."

Controversial sites

The Stanford study might also have resolved a long-standing scientific controversy about the chemical structure of catalytic active sites where oxygen reactions occur. "One group of scientists believes that iron impurities are bonded to nitrogen at the active site," Li said. "Another group believes that iron contributes virtually nothing, except to promote active sites made entirely of nitrogen."

To address the controversy, the Stanford team enlisted scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to conduct atomic-scale imaging and spectroscopy analysis of the nanotubes. The results showed clear, visual evidence of iron and nitrogen atoms in close proximity.

"For the first time, we were able to image individual atoms on this kind of catalyst," Dai said. "All of the images showed iron and nitrogen close together, suggesting that the two elements are bonded. This kind of imaging is possible, because the graphene pieces are just one-atom thick."

Dai noted that the iron impurities, which enhanced catalytic activity, actually came from metal seeds that were used to make the nanotubes and were not intentionally added by the scientists. The discovery of these accidental yet invaluable bits of iron offered the researchers an important lesson. "We learned that metal impurities in nanotubes must not be ignored," Dai said.
