Is Using a Search Engine Marketing Agency the Best Solution for ...

Finding ways to increase the amount of customers that walk through your door can leave you with many different options to choose from. We take a look at how a business can benefit from using a search engine marketing agency.

After the global recession businesses are still having a tough time improving their sales and customers through the door. The reason is because many consumers have tightened their belts meaning that they are not spending as much money any more. They have also become more frugal and watch every dollar that they spend meaning that they are constantly looking for the best deals around. This has also meant that businesses are finding it a very competitive market and are spending huge sums on advertising their company in the local area. One of the ways of doing this is to use the help of a search engine marketing agency who will be able to put your company online.

What can a Search Engine Marketing Agency do for Your Business?

Firstly the role of asearch engine marketing agency is to get your business ranking in local search results. The reason why this is become more important today than in previous years is because with advancements in technology people are now searching the internet for companies in their local area. The days of picking up the local business directory are almost finished and these directories have even moved online themselves.

The fact is if you do not have a website and an online presence then you could find yourself invisible to a huge proportion of customers. By enlisting the help of asearch engine marketing agency you will be able to promote your company and show upin your local area as a key business on the Internet.

The Internet is not only just for having a website and your shop windowit is also a place where customers will review your service. So if you are providing an excellent service in your local area then asearch engine marketing agency will be able to ensure that this is highlighted. A potential customer will look at these reviews on your businessand they will make a decision there and then based on what is on the Internet and whether to call your business or not.

It makes sense to hire a localsearch engine marketing agency to promote your business online. You need to think of it as a monthly marketing budget and see the bigger picture of the extra sales you will be making. As local businesses are clamouring to get online, if you do not act fast you may find it harder for you to get decent search engine rankings the longer you wait. It is important that you act now and speak to your localsearch engine marketing agency so that you can have an informative discussion about what options are available to you when going online for the first time.

By hiring an outside firm, you may also be saving a tremendous amount of funds that would otherwise be spent on an in-house IT Covent Garden?department. The long term savings will trump the expenses which you would need to invest in acquiring and forming a proper team to manage all tech help. Outside firms have experience and staff to manage any and all wants that arise, so your business is covered.

Dubai and other revelations ? The World Is Watching

Some of you may remember, or know (as I keep going on about it) that I went to Dubai last year. I meant to write about it at the time, and then I felt a bit sheepish about it; I worried what people would think of me ? for I knew that my overall impression was positive, and that largely, people don?t really like the idea of it being remotely positive. People actively wanted me to have a bad time there. Even if they hadn?t been there themselves. This is due in part to bad press, but also actually due to a very generic, all-encompassing western view that everything we know and grew up with is ? well ? ?All There Is?. The One Way to do things. Anything that might not fit into that view is terrifying and Very Bad Indeed.

So, Dubai. I?ll be brief: I loved it. I met loads of people ? people who have travelled or come from all kinds of places, who were doing different things. (Talking to them made me realise I have not done enough with my life.) I felt very safe most of the time I was there. I liked the sun shining (mostly). I liked the amazing, incredible architecture which is literally everywhere. Nearly every building is remarkable in its own way. It?s very American. It feels American on the surface. But its roots are Arabian, and I like that. I love eating out and going to bars, and Dubai is not short of restaurants or drinking establishments ? I think only once I was a bit disappointed with food. The rest was gorgeous. There are some world-class views to be had there. Some amazing experiences, sights, and idiosyncratic/surreal things ? like going skiing in a shopping mall in the middle of the desert. Or seeing a tiger hanging out of a car window. It mainly lacks culture in appearance, but it is there, bubbling just underneath the surface if you dare to scratch it. Then there?s the record-breaking Dubai Fountain, the immensity of which took my breath away? In short, it is not like any other city I have ever visited, and I don?t think it is like any other place on earth. Really.

Of course, there are negative aspects too, but I?m not going to dwell on that here. Google it or something.

Four months down the line, I?ve realised that it was a big learning experience for me. I?ve always been of the impression that ? sorry, gap year haters! ? going abroad really widens your horizons, and every new experience helps to shape you as a person. I could easily list a few off the top of my head:

1) Romania, 2 days after my 17th birthday, taught me that I could dive into the dark on my own, and still survive.
2) My first university taught me that sometimes, things don?t work out, and that it?s okay to fail sometimes.
3) My first job made me realise that I genuinely love working. Far, far more than studying.
4) Australia in 2010 taught me that I can be happy, that I can be fulfilled, and that I can be the life of the party if I truly want to.
5) Dubai taught me that I need to look at the bigger picture, that open-mindedness works both ways, and that it?s not possible to see things as they are until you, ummm, see them as they are.

It is this bigger picture part that has finally, finally started to make sense ? that experience has suddenly collided with previous experience and now I feel a bit more sure of myself and where my life is going.

It?ll take a while to explain because it?s been a long time coming: When I was at University, we did a unit called Global Current Affairs, which I didn?t really like at the time, but got good grades on. That summer of the second year, I went to work experience at an FT magazine about Africa (TIA), which was exclusively about news in business, entrepreneurialism, trade and finance on the African continent. I really, really enjoyed it. It was niche, it was about something that was, to me, far more exciting than UK news, and I was able to put into practice a lot of what I learned in GCA. I don?t think I ever felt like I was really learning much from my degree, so it was nice to finally have something I could point to and say ?THIS helped me?.

Anyway ? every journalist worth their salt knows they need to have some kind of direction, some kind of passion or area they want to go into. I had previously said something along the lines of ?I dunno really ? whatever drops out, I?ll take?. But that?s not the most convincing answer to the question ?What do you want to do with your life?? So I realised that finance and business journalism is probably where I wanted to go ? I?d been nudged in that direction unintentionally, and really enjoyed it. It pays well. Finance and business will always be around, so it?s a relatively stable job. That sort of thing.

But I wouldn?t really be that happy doing that here. To me, it?s boring. I want to know about what?s going on in a bigger way ? like Dubai ? going there really opened my eyes to the possibilities the Middle East has, just like TIA did with Africa. They opened my eyes to the idea that maybe, just maybe, there is more to life than the western world. I want to know why Russia and China are blocking UN resolutions on Iran. I want to know how much of Africa belongs to China, and what they?re doing with that land. I want to know who else has been investing in Africa, where Brazil comes into the picture. I?m not really interested in small details anymore. Perhaps I?m being remiss, but I feel a bit like London, the UK even, isn?t big enough a stomping ground for me anymore.

I?ve finally decided I want to do international journalism, or at least business/finance ? elsewhere and not here. It?s a bit of a weird one because it?s taken me a few years to really realise this is what I want to do. I?ve always wanted to travel loads, and since I can remember, I?ve never seen myself settling down. I like the idea of minimalism and scaling down, and making-do and being on the road. I like the idea of waking up to a different place and different experience every day. I feel like I?m doing something positive then, and I feel more connected and purposeful. I can?t sit around and feel sorry for myself when I?m busy.

Things are changing in my life and in my little corner of the internet. It?s a necessary move, and you?ll all understand in a short while. I?m not sure if I?ll keep this blog, even. But I feel reinvigorated, and a lot better than I have been in the recent past. I feel a bit like things are finally happening, even if its just mainly me figuring myself out ? and this can only be a good thing.

Social Media Marketing for Translators: Back to the Basics ? Part 2 ...

SHARE

Print Article

Take a peek at the marketing world of translators and pick up some lessons on social media marketing that may be relevant to your own niche. Watch out for the rest of this three-part series from?Anne Diamantidis.

?

This article is part 2 of the series ?Social Media Marketing for Translators: Back to the Basics?.?Part 1: Back to the Basics & Introduction

?

Welcome back! As promised in the previous chapter, today we?ll go over online reputation building and management and online credibility.

?

Online reputation & credibility: Overview

At a glance, here?s the Wikipedia definition of the term Online reputation management:?Online reputation management (or monitoring) is the practice of monitoring the Internet reputation of a person, brand or business, with the goal of suppressing negative mentions entirely, or pushing them lower on search engine results pages to decrease their visibility.?(For the small talk ? eBay were actually the ones who started the concept with their online rating system for vendors and buyers.)

?

The definition above obviously works both ways ? that is you can build your own reputation and managing it yourself, and Social Media allows you just to do that.

?

The purpose? Creating yourself a reputation and a credibility. Everything you publish, write, say, post on the Internet can be found by anyone if you wish so. This is an extremely powerful way of positioning you in whatever segment you want in the translation industry, to colleagues and potential clients. It?s your chance of showing the world what you can do, who you are, and establishing you as an expert in a given topic or field, as the professional to go to for that topic/field. Be it your actual translation specialty field, or any other activity?linguistic coaching, business skills training, etc.

?

Furthermore, Social Media allows this reputation building to be achieved bullet fast ? within a couple months, if you work on it consistently and with regularity.

?

Some obvious tools for reputation management are LinkedIn and Xing recommendations, retweets and engagement on Twitter, shares and Likes on Facebook, +?s on Google +, and not to mention the recommendation systems on translation portals, like ProZ.com?s WWA and LWA features.

?

The other side of the coin

The coin does have another side, though. While Social Media is this powerful way of building you a reputation and a credibility, it?s as powerful a way of destroying them, just as quickly!

?

Remember, you?re a freelance translator: you?re a CEO. You?re a business person. So many in the industry complain that our profession is not taken seriously, they feel undervalued, not recognized? But if we don?t take ourselves seriously for a start and do brand ourselves in a fully inappropriate way, what can we expect?

?

You?d be surprised at how many translators lose potential clients everyday without knowing it, just because of what they post on online forums or groups or write in their blogs. While they may be excellent translators, while checking them, PMs read stuff that really does not show the translator under his/her best light? and just moves on to the next candidate.

?

Sharing: Use your common sense

So be very careful what you do and write. It?s like being constantly on the edge ? and if you feel that you?re on the edge, it?s perfectly normal.?My best advice is to?use your common sense. It?s your best ally!

?

In short,?don?t behave online in a way you never would in real life?when meeting a prospect client or partner. Just don?t write things you?d never say while networking at a professional industry event. And in doubt, refrain from posting. Better safe than sorry!

?

Keep your political and religious opinions to yourself, and whatever opinions or ideas you know don?t belong in a business interaction and a marketing context.

?

Likewise, and I?m going to put this ?brutally? ? do you really think sharing your family barbecue pictures, your Foursquare check-ins or your workouts statistics on social platforms via sport applications, like ?I burnt 400 calories by running 4 km, yay!? (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook ? or worse, cross-posting to all three together), is relevant to your professional contacts? Not only are you spamming their news feeds or timelines and this is extremely annoying, but A. they could not care less and B. you?re giving a really wrong image of yourself ? and run the ultimate risk: that they unfollow you, remove you from their contacts or unsubscribe from your updates. Then you?re done ? good luck getting them back.

?

Do you really want an agency PM you never met to see pictures of you last summer, in a swimming suit, with a beer in your hand or whatever? I have hundreds of juicy examples, but I think my point is clear. Here?s my favorite, though: a translator I met at a conference back in 2009 is in my Facebook contacts, like many. I was slowly getting?annoyed by seeing self-portraits of her in front of a plate of spaghetti, in front of a glass, in front of an ice-cream, etc. everytime I would open my Facebook. Until the day she took a picture of herself naked in her bathroom mirror (from behind, gentlemen!?;)?) to show the positive effects of the gym on her behind. She posted that picture on Facebook with the comment ?Check that bum out, Pilates is really working!? Well. I?m glad that Pilates seems to be working for her, but I really could not care less and as a PM, I really don?t need to see my translators? behinds. Why am I even seeing this? She probably meant to share that with her buddies and family but did not even take the time to use Facebook?s awesome privacy features allowing you to choose who sees what for each single thing you post. Needless to say, I removed her from my contacts and she lost any chance of getting any project at all from us?

?

Personal vs. Professional

I?m not at all against sharing, quite the contrary. Just saying: share wisely and with the relevant people.?What?s personal shall be shared only with personal contacts on suited platforms.

?

Best advice I can give you if (and when) you also use Social Media for keeping in touch with friends, buddies and family is following:

  • LinkedIn, Xing, translation networks, all pure business networking sites: ?personal stuff has?nothing?to do in here so that?s settled.
  • Facebook: Facebook?s privacy settings are really complete and perfect ? and they made them simpler a few weeks ago, so you have no excuse! You can organize your contacts in groups and choose default settings for each group. You can choose exactly who sees what.
  • Twitter: the ideal is to maintain 2 separate accounts as there?s no way to make a given Tweet visible only to certain people. It?s all public. So one professional account, where you follow and are followed only by business contacts, colleagues, peers, partners. And one personal account, under a pseudonym. Why a pseudonym? It gives you the freedom to follow whoever you want, share and say whatever you want.?If?a client/employer searches your name on Google, this Twitter account will not appear in the search results.
  • Google +: Its ?Circles? features allows you to do just the same than Facebook groups ? you are in control of who sees what.

?

Mind your profiles picture(s)

A vital and underestimated element in reputation management and giving a professional image are profiles pictures ? I know this has been said and repeated over and over again, but don?t put a picture of your last vacations, your dog, your wedding, your kids, your hamster, your Grandmother, or you at a bar with sunglasses and a cigarette. Don?t use some sort of animated cartoon.

?

Likewise, and I?m dead serious: don?t put a photo of your ultrasound ?(or your wife?s). Seriously, congrats on the pregnancy, and we all understand that you are so filled with thrill you want to share it with the entire world and scream in joy, but is this appropriate? Would you put that photo on your business card? Do you really, deeply, seriously think that you?ll get any job from an agency when they interact with ? your womb (or your wife?s)?

?

Don?t laugh! I?ve seen such profile pictures on a business platform? The photo(s) you?ll use in your various online professional profiles will be the image of your brand across the Web. It?s the first thing people see wen they come to your profiles, and that photo will be ?branded? in your followers and contacts? minds, so you have to take extra care of it. Use a professional photo, take the time and the extra money to go to a photographer?s studio.

?

Recommendations & Endorsements

Last but certainly not least, be careful with the recommendations displayed in your LinkedIn profiles. While they are a really great way of establishing your credibility as a professional, they can destroy it just as well ? I invite you to read one of my previous articles on that: ?The tricky question of LinkedIn recommendations?.

?

Conclusion

The best tip I can give you is, whenever you are about to post something, ask yourself: ?Is this suitable for public view everywhere on the Internet?? ?Who do I want to see this/not see this??

Finally ? you want to be taken seriously? Then give a professional image of yourself online. Your best allies to achieve this are Social sites and Networking sites? and your common sense. So, use them!

?

Stay tuned for Part 3 on Search Engine Optimization and Visiblity!?All your comments, suggestions, thoughts are more than welcome, so go for it!

(AP) ? Businesses slashed spending on machinery and equipment in January after a tax break expired, pushing orders for long-lasting manufacturing goods down by the largest amount in three years.

Orders for durable goods fell 4 percent last month, the Commerce Department said Tuesday.

A big reason for the decline was demand for so-called core capital goods, which are viewed as a good measure of business investment plans, tumbled 4.5 percent. That's the biggest drop in a year.

Demand for core capital goods hit an all-time high in December. Companies rushed to take advantage of a tax break that expired at the end of last year.

A durable good is a product expected to last at least three years. They include everything from appliances and cars to heavy machinery and planes. Orders tend to fluctuate sharply from one month to the next. But the overall trend in orders has increased since the recession ended nearly three years ago.

In January, overall orders totaled $206.1 billion. That's 38.6 above the low hit during the recession. Orders are still 16 percent below their peak hit in December 2007.

Even without that tax break, many analysts believe business investment will pick up and stay strong in 2012 as companies take advantage of stockpiles of cash to expand and modernize their production facilities.

U.S. factories boosted output last month and December ended up being their best month of growth in five years. Strong auto sales and growing business investment in machinery and other equipment are keeping factories busy and helping the economy grow.

About 9 percent of the nation's jobs are in manufacturing. But last year, factories added 13 percent of new jobs. And in January, about one-fifth of the 243,000 net jobs the economy created were in manufacturing.

The economy grew at an annual rate of 2.8 percent in the final three months of last year. Economists are looking for roughly the same level growth in the current quarter. And a forecasting panel of the National Association for Business Economics said Monday that the economy should grow 2.3 percent this year.

Wandering about the City

Macau has earned the title of the Oriental Las Vegas as it is a gamblers' paradise, however, it is also a beautiful city with clear streets, gardens and picturesque hilly landscapes. A wander around the city is a fantastic experience!

The inner city area of Macau is ideally suited for exploration on foot and there is much to discover in the many winding streets to be found close to the main square, Largo do Senado in the downtown or along the waterfront avenues in the southern part of the city near Nam Van or Outer Harbor. We can recommend this and feel confident that no one would be disappointed. These streets close to Largo do Senado, are home to numerous restaurants, bars and cafes and clothing shops. You will find elegant Baroque style buildings from the old days and surprising local delicacies. Walking in a southerly direction along Avenida da Praia Grande will bring the visitor to the area near Nam Van. Alternatively by taking a westerly route the area along the waterfront close to Inner Harbor may be found. The many pedicabs and tricycle rickshaws that are available offer a comfortable way to tour each of these locations. A fare of 150 MOP$ is charged for one hour.On Guia Hill in the eastern part of the Macau Peninsular and the hills of the outlying islands of Taipa and Coloane, there are winding trails with exercise equipment along the roadside for those who like to jog. Hiking among the hills affords panoramic views of the city, harbors and the natural landscape of the surrounding islands. A cable car service is available from 7:30 to 18:30 each day on Guia Hill. The single trip costs three Patacas while a return ticket costs five Patacas for the round trip.Taipa and Coloane are good choices for those who like cycling. Bicycles can be rented on Taipa, from the garage next to the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau building (close to the Tin Hau Temple and bus terminal).Another unique way to tour the area is to travel on the nine-seated replica of a 1920's London bus. This splendid vehicle is chauffeur-driven. It follows a scheduled route around the city and a tour lasts approximately two hours. The fare is MOP$300 per person, however special tours may be arranged when the cost will be doubled.Golf
Macau has the most beautiful golf course in Asia. The Macau Golf & Country Club is located on the south side of Coloane Island and near the Western Resort Complex. Here the excellent golfing facilities are complimented by fine views of the landscape over the Pearl River and Hac S? beach.Karting
As a beforehand racing car of F-1, Karting is favored by the many car racing lovers who are fascinated in the Macau Grand Prix, a well-known international formula 3 game held in the city. It is much easier to drive and participants are not necessarily required for licenses. At the southern end of the causeway linking Taipa with Coloane is a karting circuit. The track is wide enough for about 30 cars racing at the same time. The complete facilities of a stand with the capacity of 2,500 people, time equipment, living broadcast screens, show halls, restaurants and special racing courts for children are provided. Foreign karting lovers and locals alike come Getting there: Bus 21, 21A or 25 can take you there.Horse& Greyhound Racings
Horse racing and dog racing are two of the alternatives for those who do not want to go to casinos. The Macau Jockey Club, located in the south-east coastal area of the outlying island of Taipa has a cosmopolitan group of trainers, riders and horses imported from several countries. The racing season is from September to August next year. Public buses to Jockey Club include 11, 15, 22, 28A, 30, 33, 34, 35 & AP1.Dog racing was introduced here in 1960 and has become a firm rival to the horse races. It has been said that bets totaling over 150,000 MOP$ are placed at any one time. The dog track is at the Canidrome located at Avenida General Castelo Branco. There are around 15 races on every racing night starting from 7:30 p.m. Admission is MOP$10 for the public stand. You can take public buses of 1, 1A, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 9A, 23, 25, 26, 26A, 32, 33 and 34 to get there. The website of Canidrome (Macau dog racing) is www.macauyydog.com.Enthralling Nightlife
Macau by day gives an impression of a graceful and tranquil city with old Euro-style buildings set against the blue sky, where people wander at leisure along the narrow and winding streets. However, as night falls a new world of enchantment opens up to the sparkling nightlife of the Macanese. The many entertainment venues and restaurants are open until late and welcome all who come to enjoy the festive atmosphere that pervades the night.

Gambling
With casinos to rival both Monte Carlo and Las Vegas, gambling accounts for almost 50% of the government revenue and forms the backbone of the city's tourist economy. Gambling casinos throughout the city are inevitably packed with people from all over the world who come to seek their fortunes.

The numerous Casinos are extravagantly bedecked with dazzling chandeliers, luxurious gaming rooms and first-class hotel facilities add to the glitz of nighttime Macau. Thousands of frenetic gamblers swarm into these venues for 24 hours to seek their fortunes. Most of the best known casinos are housed in top-class hotels in the Macau Peninsular and the island of Taipa. The flagship casinos include Hotel Lisboa Casino, Macau's first Las Vegas-invested casino Sands Macau, Galaxy Waldo Casino and Macau Palace Casino. The tables include roulette, blackjack and poker; of course there are the ever popular slot-machines as well. There are in addition local games such as Chinese fan-tan to give visitors and locals alike sound reasons for visiting in order to experience first hand the height of luxury and excitement.

Hotel Lisboa in a large bird-cage building is the king among these venues. The fa?ade entrance is designed like the big mouth of a tiger and on the lobby dome there is a heart with numerous prickles to symbolize the punishment of gamblers' greed. However, such warnings are formalities and are heeded by many with the same degree of nonchalance as the SMOKING KILLS warning on a packet of cigarettes!

The showy 'Crazy Paris Dancing' performed by charming hostesses in Hotel Lisboa and presented at 20:00 and 21:30 from Monday to Friday is the best choice for those who enjoy watching dancing.Public buses of 3, 3A, 8, 10, 10A, 10B, 12, 22, 23, 25, 28A, 28BX, 28C, 32 reach the casino. All casinos are accessible without charge but smart dress is required. There is a minimum age requirement of 18 for visitors and 21 for locals in all casinos.

The casinos accept only Hong Kong dollars and Macau Patacas and guests can exchange money either at casino counters or the nearby banks.

Children's Growing Friendships | Psychology Today

Imagine a friendship between two preschoolers and another friendship between two high schoolers. In both cases, the kids probably have fun together, and they may be very fond of each other, but the older children are able to reflect on their relationship in a much more complex way than the little ones can.

Just as children usually crawl before they walk and walk before they run, they also show a developmental sequence in their friendships. Children of different ages think very differently about friendship. As they mature, they become better able to understand another person's perspective, which adds depth and meaning to their friendships.

Based on systematic interviews with children of different ages, psychologist Robert Selman offers a very useful 5-level framework for understanding developmental trends in children's friendships. Each of these levels is described below. [Note: I've taken the liberty of adding descriptive "quotes" for each level.] Try to figure out where your child currently is, developmentally.

LEVEL 0 Friendship?Momentary Playmates: "I Want It My Way" ?(Approximate ages: 3-6 years)

Children at this stage view friends as momentary playmates, and their friendships are all about having fun together. Their friends are kids who are conveniently nearby, and who do the same things they like to do.

Children at this stage have very limited ability to see other perspectives. They assume that other children think the same way they do, so they tend to get very upset when they find out that a playmate has a different opinion.

Children in the? "I Want It My Way" stage like the idea of having friends, and they definitely have preferences for some peers over others, but they're not so good at being reliable friends. For instance, three-year-olds might say, "You're not my friend today!" if they just feel like doing something other than what their friend wants to do.

Despite the day-to-day or moment-to-moment variations in how friendly they act, preschoolers do show some continuity in their friendships. One study found that two-thirds of preschoolers who claimed each other as friends were still friends four to six months later.

LEVEL 1 Friendship?One-Way Assistance: "What's In It For Me?" ?(Approximate ages: 5-9 years)

At this level, children understand that friendship goes beyond whatever their current activity is, but they still think in very pragmatic terms. They define friends as children who do nice things for them?such as sharing a treat, saving them a seat on the bus, or giving them nice presents?but they don't really think about what they themselves contribute to the friendship.

Children at this level care a lot about friendship. They may even put up with a not-so-nice friend, just so they can have a friend. They also may try to use friendship as a bargaining chip, saying things like "I'll be your friend if you do this!" or "I won't be your friend if you do that!"

LEVEL 2 Friendship?Two-Way, Fair Weather Cooperation: "By the Rules" ?(Approximate ages: 7-12 years)

Six- to twelve-year-old children are able to consider a friend's perspective in addition to their own, but not at the same time. So what this means is that they understand turn taking, but they can't really step back and get an observer's perspective that would allow them to see patterns of interaction in their relationships.

At this stage, children are very concerned about fairness and reciprocity, but they think about these in a very rigid, quid pro quo way. So, if they do something nice for a friend, they expect that friend to do something nice for them at the next opportunity. If this doesn't happen, the friendship is likely to fall apart.

Children in the "By the Rules" stage tend to be very judgmental of both themselves and others. They evaluate themselves harshly, the way they think other people do. So, they say things like, "No one will like me because of my stupid haircut!" They tend to be jealous, and they're very concerned with fitting in by being exactly the same as everyone else.

Children at this stage often invent "secret clubs." These involve elaborate rules and lots of discussion about who is or isn't included as a member, but they tend to be short-lived.

LEVEL 3 Friendship?Intimate, Mutually Shared Relationships: "Caring and Sharing" ?(Approximate ages: 8-15 years)

At this stage, friends help each other solve problems and confide thoughts and feelings that they don't share with anyone else. They know how to compromise, and they do kind things for each other without "keeping score," because they genuinely care about each other's happiness.

For some children, this is also the "Joined at the Hip" stage. Girls, more often than boys, may be best friends and expect each other to do everything together. They feel deeply betrayed if a best friend chooses to be with another child.

LEVEL 4 Friendship?Mature Friendship: "Friends Through Thick and Thin" ?(Approximate ages: 12 years and up)

At this stage, children place a high value on emotional closeness with friends. They can accept and even appreciate differences between themselves and their friends. They're also not as possessive, so they're less likely to feel threatened if their friends have other relationships. Mature friendship emphasizes trust and support and remaining close over time, despite separations.

Selman originally proposed that later levels replace earlier ways of thinking, but it's probably more accurate to say that the more mature levels expand upon earlier perspectives, adding new and deeper layers of understanding. As adults, we value deeply intimate, on-going relationships, but we also like to have fun with our friends, and we appreciate it if they do nice things for us.? We also have different kinds of relationships, including both close and casual friends.

Some researchers have criticized Selman's friendship framework because it's based on interviews, so it's limited by what children can tell us. If we observe what children actually do in social situations, it's clear that friendships don't just burst out of nowhere at the age of three.

- Children as young as six months get excited about seeing a peer. They smile and make noises to try to get the other baby's attention, and they might even crawl over to get close to a peer, but they tend to treat peers as toys to explore.

- Twelve to 18-month old toddlers show noticeable preferences for certain peers. They can play simple games like imitating each other or peek-a-boo, which shows that they have at least some rudimentary ability to understand another person's perspective.

- Two- and three year olds can sometimes be touchingly kind to each other. For example, if they see a friend crying, they might try to comfort that friend by offering a special blanket. This shows that very young children aren't all about self-interest.

Despite these criticisms, Selman's framework vividly illustrates an important point: Children are not just short adults. The way they think about relationships is qualitatively different at different ages, and it gets progressively more complex.

Selman's framework also illustrates that some kinds of "bad" social behavior are typical at certain ages. This doesn't mean that we should just accept it when children are unkind to each other. It does mean that we need to see social problems in a developmental context. We're better equipped to respond in compassionate and helpful ways if we realize that children's social missteps usually stem from immaturity and limited understanding rather than enduring character flaws.

Did you have a close friendship as a child that grew and continued into adulthood?

LG Optimus 4X hands-on

The quad-cores have arrived and the first out of the blocks is LG's sequel to its dual-core Optimus 2X. The Korean phone maker has apparently recruited its "best engineers "on this wafer-thin slab of power and it shows; the phone is light and slim. It's taken a detour from the Prada Phone stylings we've seen on the Optimus Vu and L-series, but looks noticeably more mature than last year's efforts, with Android's Ice Cream Sandwich in attendance -- with a few tweaks. We're uploading our hands-on video as we speak -- including some very responsive video manipulation and yet more impressions. Until then, take a 360-degree tour of the device at our gallery below.
